LONDON:As the United States is taking a step back from its most important foreign policy achievement in decades, the US President’s decision to delay a Viagra-style trade deal with Britain could mark a significant step forward.
Viagra, known scientifically as sildenafil citrate, is one of the most famous medicines for treating erectile dysfunction. As the world of pharmaceuticals and biotech grew, Pfizer Inc’s Viagra was no stranger to a lot of trade deals.
The deal was announced at a US conference on Monday, where the US President said the Viagra deal with Britain would provide “a much-needed lifeline for our men seeking the powerful and enduring erection”.
“Viagra is not just an excellent treatment for ED, it’s also an excellent medicine for all men,” Mr Trump said, calling it a “first step in our global partnership”.
As Mr Trump said, the deal would allow the US to “reaffirm” its commitment to treat ED with the greatest possible level of safety and efficacy, which would make it the only country in the world that does not. “This is a very important deal for us. It is the only deal that we have made on so many levels,” Mr Trump said.
As the talks progress, Mr Trump, the US President, and the EU have reached a deal in which the EU will be given exclusive rights to sell sildenafil citrate and the US will be given exclusive rights to sell tadalafil, a drug used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Viagra was first approved in the UK in 1998 and is now the best-selling treatment for ED. It has been used since its introduction in 1998 and is the best-selling drug in the world today.

But the deal isn’t complete yet. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories’ chief executive, Dr Andrew Witty, said the company was “not ready” to give up on Viagra.
Mr Trump’s decision to delay the deal is “a historic step forward for Pfizer, a company that is focused on building new drugs that will benefit millions of men in the future,” Mr Trump said. “It is not something that we would ever be able to take lightly,” he said.
Pfizer, which produces Viagra, said that it was “continuing to research and develop” the medicines, and that it was reviewing the matter.
A statement from Pfizer said the company would not comment on the US presidential decision, but said: “As we work to build on our successes, we look forward to continuing our strong relationship with Britain and the EU.”
